Life in Focus

My September Plan: Learning

  • I'm thinking about taking a Craftsy class, trying new knitting or crochet techniques, taking out some library books. Do you have any suggestions from me?

On a Happy Note

  • We saw America and 3 Dog Night at South Shore Music Circus.
  • My friends came to visit for the weekend and we celebrated my grandmother's birthday.
  • I enjoyed the Solar Eclipse, but even funnier is this video Total Eclipse of the Heart Literal Video.
  • I met up with some knitting friends at Slum Brew in Assembly Row Somerville.
  • We've had lots of summer fun with the nieces and nephews. Sleepovers, crafts, dance camps etc!
  • Dan and I kayaked the North River. The first half was amazing. The rest was a struggle but we survived! Ha!
  • The kids contracted lice and so kindly shared it with me. Sigh. If you ever have the misfortune, my recommendation is to go to a professional place like this instead of using the drugstore shampoos!
  • Signed up for hiit training for 4 weeks with my work friends. We survived!

  • Oisin asked for alien with a baseball hat & a ball: Alan the Alien and his Flying Saucer. $5 crochet pattern by Moji-Moji Design. Alan can sit inside his saucer- the top comes off so you hide him in here. Not sure if I'll make the saucer or not but I may!
  • When asked what she wanted, Millie said dramatically "I need to THINK about it!!"
  • I now also want to make all the crochet hats!
  • I'm eyeing the Sandbar Cardiby Toni Lipsey. $7.50 crochet pattern for me.
  • Would also love to make the Easy Crop Top by Grace forthefrills (free crochet pattern)

Check out this post on Instagram for details - posted below as well to help spread the word! They say, "We want to make sure this year and beyond that BIPOC designers and dyers are represented at the New York Sheep and Wool Festival. So we wanted to do a KAL/CAL for the #myRhineBIPOCSweater."The way this will work is:
    •  Choose a piece from this list This list has been curated by @blacksquirrelberkeley (based on @jeanettesloan’s list)
    • Use/Purchase yarn from a BIPOC dyer (check out Lady Dye's previous post of BIPOC dyers)
    • Use the #RhineBIPOCSweater, and a dyer from the BIPOC Dyer list to spread the love.
    • Dyers: Jasmin and I did come up with colors theme for this KAL/CAL: purple, green, blue, golden yellow, and black. We are encouraging all those participating to use any/all of these colors for your sweater. We are asking #bipocdyers to use these colors to create your inspired colorways for this KAL/CAL. We have a link that we are using that can choose your color palette shade from the colors we listed above.
    • We really hope you all can join us in the KAL/CAL. We can’t wait to look on instagram and see the progress everyone is making and we will see you all at Rhinebeck with your sweaters on! This is what it’s all about. Taking action, working together, creating an inclusive community, and recognizing diversity in designers and dyers.

I finished a new version of a hat design I’m working through. DK weight yarn from Goosey FibersSquish Base. So squishy and soft. Highly recommend. Also realized that this base is a 75% super wash merino wool 25% nylon which I think is hard to find. But if you’re ever wanting to make DK weight socks this is a great option.

Crafty Adventures

  • Tune in to hear about how I used an old swatch to cover up a conference logo and epicycle a tote bag!
  • I used a Fiskars Perforating blade for my rotary trimmer to make the holes into which I could sew on the swatch.
  • I single crocheted around the outside edge (after sewing on the swatch- probably not the ideal order of operations), then steam blocked it.
  • Wins: Great use of swatch. Great place to put buttons and enamel pins. Great way to get more life out of a bag I may have donated but is certainly still useful to me.

Knitting In Passing

  • In visiting friends this weekend two brothers told me stories about their mother's quilting and knitting, the things she made for them and the memories they still cherish.
  • I used my half-knit sock as a beer koozie when my hand was too cold and I couldn't find the one I packed.

In my Travels

  • #BIPOCMAL: Started by DesamourDesigns on Instagram.Click here for a link to her website with all the details.
  • Refugee hats for Maine. Information from Clara Parkes on Instagram: Having fled their homes in Congo and Angola and then traveled 10,000 miles they didn’t exactly have time to stock up on warm winter woolens before they got there. This is where knitters and crocheters come in. They need warm hats and mittens especially for babies and children.

Life in Focus

  • For our annual Woodchopping Weekend Party we bought and used compostable plates, bowls and utensils. Felt great not throwing out a bunch of trash! We had some recyclables, but mostly cans. Bought growlers to cut down on the single server beer containers.
  • Have still been hitting the gym hard. Consistently 3-4 days per week now instead of 2.
  • Finalizing tech edit of a hat pattern, and knitting up 2 more. Updating those notes. Feeling very happy with my progress this year but will be happier when I get each of them across the finish line.

On a Happy Note

  • Camping in VT. Exploring new trails on our friend's property which inspired Dan and I to do some more work on our own land.
  • Woodchopping weekend- funny moment when talking about colorwork and being unsure if letters would stand out. Dan contributes “once you swatch it you’ll be able to tell”
  • Riley, Aila, Oisin slept over afterwards. Riley says she’s going to carry on Uncle Dan’s pancake tradition. Tune in after the credits for some audio with Riley and Aila.

Brainstorming

  • I'd like to start a pair of socks for my friend, Laura. Last night I wound up a skein of the color way "The Huddle is Real" a Pigskin Party Exclusive from 2018 by Queen City Yarn
  • Rhinebeck packing- at least 2 pair of socks (maybe 3) Maybe another Dragon Belly shawl?
  • Friday, I think I’ll wear my Sandbar Cardiby Toni Lipsey
  • Saturday, if its cool enough and initial forecasts indicate it will be, I’ll wear my new Watayuki pullover
  • Sunday I may wear my Grace & Frankie Shawl
  • I'll be packing my Ice Time Hat & Cowl for sure.

From the Armchair

I share my tips on getting #RhinebeckReady. If you’re on my email newsletter list you’ll receive this PDF in the email newsletter going out w/ the podcast episode.

  • Share your packing and your tips with #RhinebeckReady on Instagram.
  • If you're coming to Rhinebeck, bring me a swatch! My friend Beverly is working on an art project with the theme “connection.” She wants to work with swatches from knitters all over the world into one piece.
    Details:
    • Swatches DO NOT need to be blocked, or be from any particular type of fiber, color, or weight.
    • Please attach the following info (if you bring your swatch in a plastic bag you can slip a note in it or just safety pin to it): Where are you from? (City, country) What did you swatch this for? (it’s ok to say just for fun or for this project)
    • If you want me to send you a photo of the finished project, please include some sort of contact info - even just a ravelry name.

Knitting in Passing

Riley took the sock I was knitting on at my Dad's birthday dinner. Millie asked to knit in the car on the way home but I had to tell her no.

  • Aila and Will slept over the weekend of the 16-17th so parents can finish some renovation work at their house. Pool day Sat and Sunday!
  • Sunday afternoon went to a cookout at my Nana’s assisted living facility. Knit and listened to the music. Fun! Knitting definitely helped what could have been an otherwise boring function.
  • Aila left Giraffe Mommy- her prized possession- at our house. I came home and found her. Told Kris I’d send lots of photos of GM and me having fun so A would know she was ok. Dinner, showers, reading, made her a tent to sleep in, snuggles, riding the train, going to work. set up her own little office. Went to the craft store and then taught her to crochet so she could make a dress. Aila called Monday night when she got back from a trip with her grandmother, sad about it. Told me all of Giraffe Mommy's favorite things so I’d know. Very sweet. Brought her back on Tuesday.
  • Wednesday night I went to Will and Aila’s track meet where we did a mini birthday celebration for Will before they left for vacation. I gave him the Rhino I had intended for Christmas!
  • Finally scored a sock blank from Andre Sue Knits on Etsy
  • Mom found a photo of a dress she made when she was in her early 20's that she wore to her Bridal Shower. She handed it down to me and its my favorite item of clothing! Was fun to have a photo of her wearing it.image

    • My favorite purse currently I purchase from this shop on Etsy.
    • Hear more about my 2 bag system for commuting to work via train on Episode 93.

On a Happy Note

  • My cousin's bachelorette party in Provincetown (Cape Cod). Favorite places: Patio (went to lunch with Mom), Boat Slip Beach Club Tea Dance (4-7p)
  • MGH Diversity Statement- came through on my work email and I was so touched by it.
    • Because of diversity we will excel.   We think broadly about diversity and everything that makes us unique.  It is core to our mission. Our differences make the MGH a more interesting and distinctive environment in which to work and are an important means of providing the very best care to every one of our patients, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, religion, age, sexual orientation, disabilities, life experiences, geographic backgrounds, skills and talents among others. We will not excel without recognizing and appreciating everyone’s perspectives.
    • Through inclusion we will respect.  Together we work hard to make this hospital a diverse and inclusive place of healing. Encouraging a broad range of opinions, ideas and perspectives drives creativity, innovation and excellence. Our continued engagement in our nationally recognized initiatives and programs highlights our commitment to diversity and inclusion. But this ongoing work will not be complete until every employee, every patient, every family member, every visitor feels safe, respected, welcome, comfortable, supported and accepted within our walls.
    • Focused on equity we will serve, heal, educate and innovate.  Our job is to improve health and save lives, regardless of what our patients or colleagues look like, where they come from, what they believe, or who they love. Issues of equity and justice are not separate but rather intertwined with patient care, education, research, and community health. Targeting inequality enhances the quality of care for all. We believe in treating our patients and each other with the dignity that every human being deserves.
  • Meeting up with new friends at Gather Here in Cambridge, MA for knit night.
  • Bathing suits that fit from Athleta. Rash guard love. Pacifica (long sleeved version)
  • Not so happy- water in our well is low because of the summer drought. Good news is that we're finding ways to conserve water and hopefully are building in some better long-term routines.

Rhinebeck Festival Prep: My Tips
  • Clothes- layers. Wear your knits.
    • Tip: pick your hand knits first. Choose the rest of your outfit accordingly!
  • Shoes should be comfy (and not new). Something you won't mind if they get covered in muck.
  • Bag/purse- try not to make it too big.
  • Camera- capture the fun. For me, iPhone is great.
    • Pen + paper- in case you see a pattern you want to jot down name of etc. If you're a digital person you could take photos and jot them down later.
  • Check out vendor list in advance. Make list of MUST go to vendors and where they are located.
  • Make list of what you'd like to buy yarn for. Put list of what you need on phone/paper (something that doesn't require internet) cell service is getting better but can still be spotty.
  • Bring snacks/water. Aim to eat at non-traditional times. Everyone wants to get lunch at 12 or 1. It's hard to do when you just want to shop and see and chat. I recommend setting timers on your phone if you're the type who can get lost in the day.
  • Bing a mix of cash and card if possible.
    • Food vendors sometimes only take cash
    • Some booths line for cash and one for cards. if have both- you can pick shorter line.
  • Don't pack too much knitting. Simple sock etc. bring extra sock needle or hat needle. You may want to cast on right  away!
  • Many things at the really packed booths at Rhinebeck DO SELL OUT. Some vendors bring stock for Sunday. Some don't. Many people like to do a loop before committing to things but if there's only a couple and you're going to majorly regret it if its gone later. Consider buying it on the first pass.

Metro Link Train Collison
I received an email at work today.....

"A special message from Benjamin K. Chu, MD, MPH, president, KFHP/H, Southern California, and Jeffrey A. Weisz, executive medical director and chairman of the board, SCPMG, concerning the September 12 Metrolink train crash in Chatsworth.

As many of us began heading home on Friday, September 12, we were jolted by the unfolding news of the terrible Metrolink train collision in Chatsworth.

Immediately, our Woodland Hills, Panorama City, and other area medical centers went on alert, and staff readied to receive and treat victims of the accident. Five individuals were treated in our facilities. As of today, it is reported that 25 people died as a result of the crash.

Sadly, our own Kaiser Permanente family has been affected by the accident. We learned that Beverly Mosely, ombudsman for Panorama City Medical Center, was killed in the accident. Beverly, who worked for Kaiser Permanente for more than 20 years in a variety of roles, is survived by her mother, two adult daughters - Nicki and Tina - and a two-month old grandson, Kingston. She enjoyed music, especially jazz, and had a beautiful singing voice. She also liked to travel and golf.

During her career with KP, Beverly served as a night nurse in Labor and Delivery, Quality director for Panorama City and Woodland Hills, was our first patient advocate, and worked on KP HealthConnectTM before serving as Panorama City's ombudsman.

When her colleagues speak about Beverly and her work, they mention her compassion and her knack for knowing when someone needed a hug. They say she had an ability to connect with people and a smile that would light up a room. She was known as a "guardian angel" to our patients and their families during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with Beverly and her family, and with the many other families suffering throughout the Southland today because of this catastrophe.

This week will be a long one as some of us remember the friends and loved ones we have lost because of the tragedy in Chatsworth, and as we come to learn about the effects of Hurricane Ike in Texas and Louisiana.

Both of these situations, of course, remind us of why we do the work we do, and why we continually work to improve our results.

Thank you to the physicians and employees of Woodland Hills and Panorama City for your dedication Friday afternoon and evening. Thank you to each of you for your compassion and dedication to this cause of Health. And, Beverly Mosely, thank you for your passion and all that you gave to Kaiser Permanente's members, patients, staff, and physicians."

Cache

USB 3.1 Extreme Go [CZ800], 64GB

Samsung 32GB Metal Flash Drive

Samsung 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Fit

PNY [PNY] Wave Turbo USB 3.0 MLC 메모리, 256GB

By day, Burdick is a librarian at Sno-Isle Libraries working in collection development.

Away from the library, Burdick can often be found on the Seattle Opera stage as a member of the regular chorus.

“I've been working in the library since I was in high school. I started as a page putting books away,” Burdick says.  “And I've worked in all the different levels of being a staff member at the library. I put myself through college, my undergraduate degree by working in the library.”

After graduation, Burdick was working full time in a library.

“… but I was not a librarian,” she says. “A few years and went and, ‘Boy, I really like this work. I want to be a librarian.’ So I've been in the library since I was very young, and decided when I was about 28 to become a librarian.”

Similarly, Burdick says her early musical tastes ran toward musical theater, Harry Belafonte and the Kingston Trio, not opera. After happening upon a role with the Long Beach Opera in California, Burdick has been focused on the classic form.

That opportunity turned out to be a gold-medal choice.

Burdick decided to enter the solo category as a mezzo-soprano in the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales. “(The) choir that I was singing with was going and I thought, ‘Well, I'm a singer, I will go and audition; I will go and participate in the solo competition,’” she says “I'd never done anything like that before.

“… I won first place.”

For the past 11 years, Burdick has been singing as a member of Seattle Opera’s regular chorus. “Whenever there is a show that has a full chorus, I'm in it, unless I'm not available but I usually I'm because I love it,” she says.

Burdick says her interest and expertise in music pays off while performing her duties as a collection development librarian focusing on children’s materials, which she has been doing since about 1985. When reviewing additions to the library’s musical collection, she casts a critical eye.

“I listen to see if it sounds like it's well-produced because a lot of these are self-published,” Burdick says. “I listen to how it's orchestrated, meaning what kind of instrumentation it has. I listen to how the person sounds, I listen to several of the songs on it to make sure they don't all sound exactly the same. And I look and see what they're singing about, and such.”

Combining both vocation and avocation makes Burdick smile.

“One of my favorite points is when I finish singing and there's this moment of silence before the audience starts to applaud, that is just, I just feed on that,” Burdick says. “That's just a joy.”

And the library?

“I really believe that the library provides many, many, many tools for people to live fully,” Burdick says. “Collection development gets to choose all the books, audiobooks, eBooks, DVDs; all the materials people can check out.”

And she loves that, too.
